- Letting the Ball Go
- Bend your knees in ready position
- ”Get skinny” by turning to the side to avoid the ball.
- Shoulder high, let it fly.
- It’s okay to take a step back when you recognize your opponents have an attackable position.
- Block, don’t counter if you have to hit the ball
- Recognize where your opponent is attack from on their contact - if it’s a very low contact point, you should already be thinking about letting the ball go.
- Look for tells of attacks- a bigger backswing is the most common one
- Communicate to your partner when you think the ball is going out.
- Don’t play balls in practice, it transfers to real game bad habits.
- Try to recognize spin - if it looks like they have topspin it’s more of a reason to play it. More underspin, particularly from a low point and hit hard, is more of a reason to let it go.
- Recognize your conditions - A harder ball like a durafast will fly more, the ball also flys more in higher altitude, dryer air, and colder temperatures. The more of these factors you have, the more conscious you need to be about letting the ball go.
- The deeper you are in the court, the more you should be letting high balls go.
