  • Lob Retrieval
  • Anticipate a potential lob when your opponent takes a bigger backswing and/or drops under the ball with their paddle more than normal.
  • Favor hitting the lob out of the air as an overhead even if you are slightly off balance, rather than running back to defend it off the bounce.
  • Run back at a slightly rounded angle to give yourself room to swing once you arrive to the ball. Do not run in the same path as the flight of the ball.
  • Your preferred return of the lob, when taking it off the bounce, should be a forehand drop into the kitchen.
  • Take your time with your shot when running backwards. Allow the ball to drop to a comfortable height before striking it. You have more time than you think.
  • Track the ball with your eyes as you run backwards. Do not lose sight of the ball and simply guess at where it will land.
  • Overrun the ball slightly so you can make contact in line with your front knee.
  • Gauge how good your return is before attempting to regain your position at the kitchen line.
  • Hit a perfectly measured tweener drop into the kitchen if you make the mistake of running on the same path as the ball. ;)

Pro Tips

BEN JOHNS

My favorite strategy drill is the Backhand Volley Attack from the Ad Court because it such an effective shot. Practice this and you will win more points!

COLLIN JOHNS

My favorite drill is the Dink Reset Drill because it is so important to work on staying patient and ressetting yourself.

DEKEL BAR

I love to drive the ball so the Drive and Drop Drill is a key component of my game.
