PICKLEBALL 360
- DINK ATTACK
- Ben Johns
Hi, I'll be going over the technical aspects of the dink attack. So a dink attack is something where you would normally hit a dink and you choose to attack the ball instead. Now, I do want to encourage you to genuine generally attack balls that are above the level of the net and usually out of the air, but it's also good to have a dink attack as another option just so that players don't always know what's coming. So a good dig attack. Something like that. A couple things you want to consider are first your opponents shouldn't see this ball coming. One of the whole ideas behind attacking a dink is that it's easier to dissise your opponent's pretty close to you. So you don't need to generate a lot of power to surprise them and because of that you don't need to take a big backswing a big backswing is the number one indicator of when a person is going to attack the ball. So what I first went into focus on is when you're dinking once you choose to attack don't lengthen that back swing at all take the same backswing and generate power simply by accelerating the paddle through the zone and occasionally a slight use of the wrist. All right. Don't go overboard with this. You don't need to generate a ton of power. You're not trying to crush the ball because you are taking the ball usually from below the level of the net it's more important to control the ball with moderate pace and an awkward spot for your opponent. Generally, if you're going to attack this ball unless you have a very good backhand. I would prefer that you use your forehand. So you can see I'm just starting the the paddle right about here still in front of my body and accelerating through you can also see that if I'm attacking the person in front of me. I'm expecting that next ball to come back. This is not a winter shot You're Expecting the ball to come back to you if you're attacking straight ahead. So as soon as you hit this ball right here, you should be recovering back to Center so that when that next ball comes back you're ready for the next shot. So right you can see there that I'm attacking resetting finishing. Then I'm attacking resetting finishing. Then I'm attacking resetting finishing. Two other things you can do to make the shot more consistent and more effective our first you want to make sure you're bending your knees when you attack. Of course. The reason for this is if you're standing straight up and the ball's way down here. Your depth perception is not going to be nearly as good and you're not gonna be able to keep that ball low to the level of the net if you're on the same level and attacking from here right here. It's very easy to keep the ball low right where you want it secondly how to generate Top Spin on this shot if for hitting Back Spin and coming underneath the ball as an attack as soon as they let that ball go. It's more likely to go out side of the court because back's been makes the ball float. So we definitely would like a little bit of Top Spin on this ball. So the easiest way to do that is have a flat paddle or slightly closed face paddle by that. I mean flat closed and combine that with a slightly upward swing. So when you come up with a slightly closed paddle face, it's going to generate a ball that has Top Spin but goes forward. So you might ask how much power do I want to hit on this shot in a good answer is you want to hit approximately an amount to where it's a good setup shot and you might get a kind of weak reply but not so hard that it would go out this of course a fine balance. Something like that if put in the right spot is gonna be just what you want as far as generating topsping goes you're going to want a slightly close paddle face or flat paddle face combined with an upward swing. And there you have the dink attack.
