PICKLEBALL 360
- Backhand Recovery Dink
- Ben Johns

Hi, I'll be going over the technical aspects of the backhand recovery dink. A recovery dink in contrast to a normal dink is something where you're in a bad position and you want to get back into the rally into a neutral position a lot of the time you'll find that lesser players will go for a more desperate shot the worst of a position. They're in that's definitely what we do not want to do the worst of a position. You're in the more defensive of a shot you want to go for. So you can see right there. That when I was driven out wide I chose to dink the ball down the line. The reason for this is that when you're driven out wide your body will naturally close you can see my right shoulder is now faced down the line you want to follow what your body is telling you so when your body's closed it's gonna be very difficult to get it back across Court where you would normally dink your ball because instead your body's just gonna cause you to pop it up to the middle normally. That's why when we're closed and we get pushed out wide. We want to bail out down the line. Now some things to consider here. Are you're now going over the highest part of the net to the shortest part of the kitchen bearing that in mind you want to make sure that you're taking a very soft easy swing and then you're getting under the ball even more than usual. So you can see right there that I'm making a very concerted effort to get the ball to bounce right there because you know that your opponent has an easier time reaching in and taking that ball out of the air and attacking it if you hit it at all too far because it's such a short part of the kitchen. So make sure you're getting under the ball hitting it very soft and getting it to bounce in front of you and then you should be recovering back to the middle of your side. Now you might ask. Okay, what do I do if I get pushed back rather than get pushed to the side? That's another good question. So if you're not in a good position to volley the ball like that or half fully the ball, sometimes it's just awkward. Maybe you're off balance and you tend to back up or maybe your partner set you up. But sometimes you're gonna end up back here. All right. Now what you want to realize is it the further you are back the more error, you need to give yourself the more room for air. So you're gonna hit it higher over the net by opening the paddle face a little bit more. But because you're hitting it higher you also want to make sure you hit it softer to ensure that it's still bounces in the kitchen and gives you time to get back to the kitchen light. So you can see getting under the ball and now I'm back to neutral here. Another thing that often happens when you're in a desperate position is people tend to take a bigger swing and they tend to use the wrist more. Neither of those things is what you want when you're further back you want to ensure that you're swinging very simply and making sure that you're making contact right in the middle of the paddle. You can best do that with a small easy swing minimal movement and definitely not using your wrist one more time. Now I do want to emphasize this shot is not something you should be aiming to do. I'm just letting you know what you should be doing. If you get in this position, I would always rather see you staying in neutral volleying the ball half volume the ball or hitting a normal dink. But if you find yourself in that bailout position, I want you to be able to get back into the point rather than going for a desperate shot that will lose you the point. And there you have the backhand recovery dink.
